Best Way To Protect Your Furnace From Damage

How Long Does A Furnace Last?

Furnaces on average last 15-20 years, heat pumps 16 years, and air conditioning units 10-15 years. Tankless water heaters last more than 20 years, while an electric or gas water heater has a life expectancy of about 10 years. Show Your Garbage Disposal Some TLC

To extend the life of your garbage disposal and to avoid repair costs avoid putting very hard substances down the drain such as clam shells, shrimp, and other shellfish, unpopped popcorn kernels and hard bones. It’s always good to be extremely cautious with putting banana peels, celery, potato peelings, corn husks, and cobs. Certain things should never be put down the drain such as fruit pits and hard seeds, avocado and peach pits and even egg shells because they turn into a sandy substance inside the pipes. Our Plumbers Prepare For The Big Winter Storm

As New Jersey braces for winter weather, our heating and plumbing experts are busy responding to calls for service.

“My husband woke me up this morning saying we did not have any heat,” said Gertha Heggie.

The Raleigh homeowner quickly called for help, but the cold was too much to handle.

“I left the house,” said Heggie.

It did not take long for a technician to pinpoint the problem. The cold temperatures created electrical issues causing the system to shut off.

Similar calls for service are spiking. Since Tuesday, Green Apple has received more than 50 calls from customers without heat or hot water.

With snow in the forecast this weekend, crews are planning to work overtime to accommodate customers.

Tips To Avoid Damage:

Locate Main Water Shut Off

  • The main valve is usually found inside a utility closet. In the event of a plumbing emergency, shut down the main water valve first.

Turn off Sprinkler Systems

  • The sprinkler is the most exposed to the elements. Turning off the sprinklers will flush out any water that has collected in the hoses and keep them from freezing over.

Disconnect Outdoor Hoses

  • Remove all outdoor hoses from the hose bib. A frozen hose can completely damage the bib, which can be a costly repair.

Insulate Exposed Pipes

  • Insulate exposed pipes using inexpensive and easy to install foam wrap. This will also help cut down on your energy bills.

Repair Existing Leaks

  • Repair all leaks no matter how minor. The slightest leak can cause plumbing problems in freezing temperatures.
